North Shields 1sts - 6 Sunderland 2nds - 4

The seconds shot themselves in the foot by conceding after 10 seconds and then again within 2 minutes. It was always going to be difficult to get back into the game against a much improved North Shields team and so it proved, with the hosts taking a 4-1 lead in with them at half time. Sunderland improved after the break scoring three times but eventually went down 6-4. Man of the match Mark Wilkinson bagged a brace, the second a well hit reverse shot following a short corner. Craig Togher and Thomas Brown also netted rounding off good passing moves. The seconds will need to tighten up if they are to take the points off fellow strugglers Richmond this Saturday.

Sunderland 2nds 0 Newcastle Uni 4ths 1

The seconds hosted a fit Newcastle Uni 4th’s at Raich Carter loosing undeservedly 0-1.
Sunderland 2nds once again playing with a depleted side produced their best performance of the season dominating throughout creating
several chances in front of goal but once again lacking that killer touch.
An excellent display from the defence including Thomas Brown on the right side giving he's best performance of the season, complemented by the return of Sam Evans from injury on the left will Sunderland confidence for up and coming games.
Sunderland’s midfield now looking more solid with the introduction of Mark Wilkinson and Phil Smith in the centre and Chris Vaughan putting in a solid performance on the left will no doubt give more chance for the forwards in weeks to come.
Captain Andrew Wilkinson will take great heart from this performance as his team improves leaps and bounds on a weekly basis and will look forward to securing 3 points away to St.Georges next week.

Hartlepool 1sts 4 Sunderland 2nds 1

The seconds lost out in a physical encounter with Hartlepool. Mark Wilkinson scored the only Sunderland goal but the side did enjoy some good possesssion but fine goalkeeping by the pools goalie prevented further scores. After two very difficult away games the seconds will be looking to pick up points at home to Newcastle University this weekend.

Sunderland 2nds - 1 Tynedale 1st - 1.

Sunderland 2nds bounced back from their heavy loss last week and really should have won this League game having dominated for much of the match. The Wearsiders scored first through an excellent individual centre forward`s goal from substitute (the silver fox and 4th Team Captain!) Robin Wilson who from a through ball beat 2 defenders before rounding the keeper to slot into an empty net. An early contender for goal of the season. However, as the game went on, the more Tynedale got into the game and eventually scored through a short corner. For Sunderland, goalkeeper Anthony Merton Smith made some excellent saves, Peter Billyard worked hard in midfield and Gary Looker played well in defence and made a particular vital tackle late in the game on the goal line to ensure the Wearsiders deservedly took a valuable point.

Durham City 2nds - 5 Sunderland 2nds - 1

Sunderland 2nds travelled to Maiden Castle in the hope of avenging a 5-0 defeat at home earlier in the season and came away with an equally disappointing result. Overall, this was a poor result for the Wearsiders as on paper they had a much stronger team and had been expected to come away with something. The 2nds will need to gel more as a team as well as put up more resistance if they are to avoid becoming embroiled in a relegation battle in this difficult league. Neil Holmes was Sunderland`s man of the match and deservedly scored the consolation goal with a fierce strike from the top of the circle which left the Durham keeper stranded. To compound an awful weekend for the 2nds, they travelled to Richmond on sunday to play a vital rearranged league fixture only to find that both teams were locked out of the pitch. The North East Hockey League will now meet at the end of the Month to adjudicate what sanctions to impose on Richmond for this remarkable oversight.
Sunderland 2nds travel to Darlington this weekend in a must win relegation battle between 2 teams struggling in the relegation zone.

Sunderland 2nds 2 Wilton 2nds 1

THWAITE DOUBLE KICK STARTS SUNDERLAND 2nds SEASON
Sunderland University student Daniel Thwaite scored a double to help secure Sunderland 2nds second win of the season against Wilton 2nd team.  The team were missing captain Steve Crute due to injury, but welcomed the return of Tony Barber and Neil Holmes.
However it was Wilton who opened up the scoring ten minutes into the game after the Sunderland defence gifted them the goal after missing key tackles. As the game went on Sunderland began to take control of the game. Vaughan found himself one on one with the Wilton keeper, but just as he thought he was past and through on goal, the keeper managed to get his stick to the ball and deflect the ball away.
A tactical move saw Chris Vaughan be replaced by midfielder Daniel Thwaite as centre forward and it paid off immediately when after being awarded penalty corner Sunderland player Thwaite collected the ball at the top of the D and slammed an unstoppable shot into the Wilton goal. Sunderland grew in confidence and began to maintain possession. It finally looks as if the new formation has begun to pay off and the team is developing well as a unit.
Half time ended 1-1. It was Sunderland who extended their lead in the second half when Fisher and Vaughan work a 1-2 down the left side of the pitch and Fisher then fed in Thwaite who once again finished with a well placed strike into the corner of the Wilton goal. Both teams continued to exchange goal scoring opportunities right up to the final whistle. In fact Looker almost presented Wilton with an equaliser at the end of the game, but for Burke who saved the Wilton shot. An excellent team performance that outlined to potential the second team has.  Next weekend sees Durham City visit the Raich Carter Centre.
Team:- Burke; Evans; Gardner; Barber; Looker; G. Pearson; Holmes; Fisher (capt); Brown; J. Pearson; Thwaite; Vaughan; Fox; McGinlay; Wilson.

Sunderland 2nds still cannot stop this losing feeling.  A 4-1 defeat to Marton Furness 2nds means that the team currently lies 3rd from bottom. Even a new formation, an orange man and a new goalkeeper could not change things on the pitch, although the team now consists of youth and this can only benefit the club for the future. Marton’s first goal came from an initial shot from the top of the D which was saved by A. Thompson, but the ball deflected back into open play and Marton scraped it home. Their second goal also came from a bit of luck, with Steve Crute missing a regular tackle at the top of the D , letting the Marton player through and who then went on to place the ball between the Sunderland goalkeepers legs into the goal. 2-0 at half time.

Marton Furness added a third quickly after half time, after the Sunderland goalkeeper brought down the Marton Furness centre forward and they converted the penalty stroke. It was Martons fourth goal that deserved credit. A quick counter-attack result in the opposition striker slamming the ball into the Sunderland goal. Sunderland did get a consolation goal, with Sunderland student Daniel Thwaite converting a short corner right at the end of the match. Sunderland 2nds are becoming a harder team to break down and now they must remove the errors in their game if there are to turn things around this season.

MOM – Glen Pearson –superb performance at centre back

WALLY- Steve Crute for getting sent to the sin bin.

SLAIN BY ST GEORGE’S

After a positive start to the season Sunderland 2nds went into their second game of the season against Northumbria St Georges 2nds on Cloud nine. It took less than one minute for Cloud nine to merge into the rain clouds as St Georges scored from a deflected free hit. St Georges continued to adapt the best to weather conditions and push for a second goal.

Sunderland dug deep and managed to get themselves on level terms. The goal came from a short corner, with Crute shifting the ball left to Wilkinson who then flicked the ball into the bottom left corner of the St Georges goal. Celebrations were short lived, when three minutes later St Georges were awarded a penalty corner which they duly slammed into the Sunderland net.

Sunderland were not ready to keel over and Wilkinson again played an important part in the equaliser. After being awarded a penalty corner, the initial shot broke to Wilkinson. He turned quickly and placed the ball into the path of G. Pearson who lifted the ball over the advancing goalkeeper into the net. Sunderland would have settled for both sides going into the interval on level terms, but St Georges conjured up one final attack before the break.  A ball fed out to the right side was despatched into the Sunderland area and broke to the St Georges centre forward, who drew the goalkeeper and placed the ball calmly into the goal. Sunderland 2 Northumbria St Georges 3 was the half time score.

St Georges put the game beyond Sunderland mid way through second half when again the centre forward was put through and placed a reverse stick hit past the diving save of Burke the Sunderland goalkeeper. Although Sunderland continued to press, they could not find a goal to get them back into the match and the final score ended Sunderland 2nds 2-4 Northumbria St Georges.Man of the Match went to Steve Crute.  Next weeks sees Sunderland 2nds take on league leaders Morpeth.

Team: Burke, Fisher, Looker, Barber, Gardner, Crute(c), Raine, J. Pearson, G. Pearson, Wilkinson, Vaughan, Brown.

SECONDS OFF TO A WINNING START

A new look second team came away with a winning start to the season against a Darlington 1sts. Goals from the youngest and oldest members of the team ensured a 2-1 win. The Sunderland team had five new faces in its squad, some who had been there before (Vaughan, Scheu, Brown & Raine), but for some it was their debut for the club (Goalkeeper Burke).

The first half saw Sunderland on the back foot initially. Darlington took advantage of the new look Sunderland, running the midfield and creating chances, but solid defending by Sunderland ensured that Burke in the Sunderland goal was never really tested in the first half. Sunderland left back Evans certainly hit the ground running, making some outstanding one handed tackles.

The five man Sunderland midfield gradually took charge of the game and it was G. Pearson whose creative pass, with a bit of luck, sent Raine through on goal. Raine ran at the goalkeeper, striking the ball into the ground which then caused it to lift over the sliding goalkeeper into the Darlington goal.  Sunderland kept on applying the pressure, but failed to extend their lead before half-time. In fact Darlington almost equalised through a couple of defensive errors, but Sunderland held out to lead 1-0 at half time.

Whether it was the half time talk, Sub Vaughan not being on the pitch, an injured Looker or just a momentary lapse of concentration, Darlington were back in the game. The Sunderland defence failed to clear the ball and Darlington player Till took advantage of the situation scoring a goal from a very tight angle. However their lead lasted just ten minutes. Sunderland looking to turn things around, were awarded a penalty corner. J. Pearson hit out the short corner, Vaughan stopped and team captain Crute struck a soft but well placed shot which sneaked inside the post, passing the Darlington defender on the line.

Darlington almost equalised in the final minutes, but it was Sunderland who ran out winners on the day. Youngsters Brown, Raine and J. Pearson all performed superbly on the day. Man of the Match went Sam Evans who certainly kept Sunderland in the game with his last minute tackles. With two players missing from the squad this week, the future is certainly looking bright for the team, but focus must remain on developing team spirit and tactics. Next week sees Northumbria St Georges visit the Raich Carter Centre for a 2:30pm  start.

Team: Burke, Fisher, Looker, Evans, Gardner, Crute(c), Raine, J. Pearson, G. Pearson, Scheu, Vaughan, Brown.
